Young Fashion Sewing

We will start with a Pattern and you will learn the skills needed to make this lovely garment over the course of 4 sessions.

Session 1
• Measure yourself correctly
• Choose your size
• Cut your paper pattern
• Pinning your pattern to the fabric

Session 2
• Cut out your fabric
• Transfer pattern markings to your fabric
• Make a sample of seam method to be used
• Start to make T-shirt

Session 3-4
• Making your T-shirt
• Finishing
• Hem
• Discuss how you could get creative with this pattern and make other options

Our lovely dressmaking tutor, Alison, will guide you through the process, show you how and will answer all your questions.

This course is for tweens and teens (11-16 years old) of all genders with basic sewing knowledge and a passion to learn more about making their own clothes.

Please note there will be a maximum of 4 learners on this course to ensure that everyone has enough time to get hands on support from their lovely tutor as well as enough space to cut out their garment.

Fabric & other requirements - decide which option you would like to make

• Short Sleeve – 1m of 55” (140cm) wide
• ¾ or Long Sleeve – 1.5m of 55” (140cm) wide fabric

Choosing your fabric
Light/medium weight knit fabric, e.g. cotton/Lycra jersey, rayon/Lycra jersey, bamboo/Lycra jersey. 50%+ stretch is required.

You can also buy special ribbing fabric suitable for the neckband in a matching/contrasting colour. You could get several neckbands from . https://www.1stforfabrics.co.uk/product-category/rib-cuffing/

***Your tutor recommends – cotton/lycra jersey with 95% cotton and 5% lycra is ideal for this project. There are lots of places you can buy this online, but one of my favourites is 1st for Fabrics. https://www.1stforfabrics.co.uk/product-category/cotton-lycra-jersey/

Beware of fabrics with stripes, checks or bold patterns as pattern matching is an advanced skill and is not covered in this course.

If you want to, you can bring along your own sewing kit. (This is optional as all tools you might need are provided for you to use.)
