Where do you get your ideas from?
I usually spot something when I'm out for a run or a walk, I take a photo on my phone and then decide how it will work as a print or illustration. I also get inspired by visiting galleries, which is one of my favourite things to do.
Who or what inspired you to take up a creative career?
I had been selling my prints, cards and illustrations for a couple of years when I was asked to run a Christmas card lino print workshop. This was a few years ago. Eventually I realised that if I could put more time into both tutoring and making, then I could ditch the day job and focus on what I love doing!
What's your top tip for beginners?
My tip is to try as many different things as you can. I only got into printmaking by doing a drawing and painting nightschool class at Sheffield College, we had one week of printmaking as part of it and I was intrigued. I like to try new things, I've taken part in a watercolour workshop recently and have just signed up to learn pottery.
What's the strangest thing you have ever made?
During lockdown (I forget which one, there were many) I made a large lino print of an art deco plant with Covid "flowers" - instead of flower heads, I used the Covid bug. Some people loved it, some weren't as keen.
We love a cuppa at StraightCurves, how do you have yours?
Well, I have something to admit. I don't like tea or coffee. My girlfriend is a tea fiend though, so I'm used to making them. I am usually found with a Coke Zero instead of a hot drink.
