Meet Carol Wilson one of our textile tutors. She specialises in fibre art, using naturally-dyed, rare-breed and local wools. Carol’s work is inspired by the Peak District and the Jurassic Coast where she grew up. She loves the palette of colour achieved from plant-dyes. Carol has a degree in Design & Technology and is a qualified teacher. She spent several years in primary teaching before switching to leading arts projects and workshops for all ages ten years ago.

Q&A with Carol

Where do you get your ideas from?
My inspiration comes from walking my cheeky wire-fox terrier out in the Dark Peak. I always have a camera to hand to capture ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ moments - light changes, textures and rock shapes. Birds and animals are also a common theme.

What one thing have you made that you’re most proud of?
I’m most proud of large community pieces, which I’ve worked on with groups with long term health problems like,’ Moorland Panorama’ which is 3m x 1m and displayed at The Moorland Visitor Centre, Edale.

What’s your favourite thing about teaching?
I love running workshops. It’s great seeing people gain new skills and so rewarding. I especially like seeing the variety of results from the same starting points and the sense of achievement on faces.
