Virtual Bitesize Beginners Crochet for Kids

This virtual course will consist of a series of short sessions to introduce children to all the basic crochet stitches. Ideally they need to practice between sessions so we are scheduling it during the Easter Holidays to allow them something to look forward to. Sessions vary in length so please check the times and dates are all free before booking. Each session is tutor led step by step through zoom a virtual meeting software which is free for you to download online.

It is ideal for children who have never crocheted or knitted before. You will need some basic equipment and materials to get started and we are currently putting together a beginners kit that you will be able to purchase online for delivery prior to course start date.

Session One: Getting to grips (30 mins)
Learning how to hold your hook and how to create a chain.

Session Two: Double the fun (30 mins)
We will be learning how to double crochet and understanding turning chains.

Session Three: It's getting bigger all the time... (45 mins)
Lets make a project I will help you to design a jar cover, phone case or small toy.

Session Four: Simple Flower (60 mins)
We will put together what we have learnt so far to make a few flowers.

Session Five: Trebles (30 mins)
Learning how to make trebles a little trickier than doubles but sooo much bigger.

Session Six: Granny Squares (90 mins)
Learn how to follow a pattern and set of rules to make these traditional squares that will allow you to create bigger items yourself such as cushion covers, blankets and even cardigans!

Session Seven: Another flower (45 mins)
We will learn about clusters and make a flower from thick yarn (called chunky).

Session Eight: Lovely Lizards (up to 120 mins)
Putting together everything we have learned and sneakily learning half trebles too we will make a gecko bookmark by following a pattern.

Each session will allow your child to see the other children taking part and the tutor and what everyone is making. It is up to you if you turn your sound and video on but we do recommend it so that your child's work can be monitored by the tutor and they can ask questions and show what they are doing to the tutor.

Children aged 8 -16 years old with no prior experience needed.

If you have more than one child we would request that you purchase multiple places as we are limiting numbers to allow us to help everyone during the session. We also recommend one device per child in different rooms to enable the tutor to see what each child is doing and avoid sound feedback. Alternatively you can have two devices next to each other and turn off audio and volume on one of them to avoid feedback.

You will need some basic equipment and materials including; a pair of scissors, a knitters or tapestry needle, 4mm crochet hook and double knitting yarn. For the granny square session 6 two colours of double knitting would be good and for session 7 it would be useful to have chunky or super chunky yarn but not essential.

You will also need a method to get online (phone, tablet, computer), a free download of zoom software and a clear space to work we suggest a kitchen table. desk or worktop.

You will be working from home and will make a variety of items during the course outlined in the session structure above. You will receive electronic copies of session notes and patterns before each session to allow you to print them off before hand.
