Indigo Tie Dyeing

This is a hands-on practical workshop to create beautiful patterns on fabric using tie dyeing techniques including, shibori, tritik, pleating, stitching, binding and folding.

We will make up an indigo vat and use it to dye our tied fabrics. Dyeing indigo blue is an interesting chemical process using powdered root from the indigo plant.

Once the fabric has been dyed we will untie them to expose the patterns. The dyed fabrics can then be used for clothes, cushions, bags and other textile crafts.

Q1: If you are planning on bringing any yarn, fabric or a t-shirt with you (optional) please let us know what. It should only be smallish amounts of yarn/fabric as it all has to fit in our pots and pans!

This session aimed at adults but children aged 8 and older can come with a participating adult. You do not need any knowledge of dyeing fabric but the session also suits those who have a basic knowledge and would like to experiment further with dyeing techniques.

All materials will be supplied, but if you have pieces of fabric or a tee-shirt that you would like to tie and dye with indigo, please bring them. You may also like to bring an apron as it could get messy!

There will be a refreshment break where tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. However if you would like anything more substantial you will have time to wander into town or please feel free to bring along your own food - we do have a fridge for storage too.

You will create several unique pieces of blue, tie dyed fabric and/or anything you have bought with you to dye like a tee-shirt. You will have gained enough practical experience and the knowledge to enable you to tie dye your own fabric with indigo at home.
