Gonks

Create your very own magical gonk Santa or garden gnome. Inspired by Scandinavian folklore this mysterious creature will surely add a magical touch to your home or garden.

During this 3-hour workshop we will be making a gonk or gnome from stoneware clay using slap building techniques and coiling. We will first make their stout round body from a cylinder and then a tall pointy hat from a cone. You can then add the choice of your own design of beard with coils. Either make it a full, fluffy beard or an intricate curly designer beard! Or go for a girl with braids and a necklace! If you wish you can then cut shapes out of the hat so you can put your gonk over a tealight to light up.

Samples will be shown with all techniques demonstrated and explained. As we're building using stoneware clay you could create gonk or gnome that will be perfectly safe for your garden.

Whether you believe in the magical powers of gonks or not, there's no denying that they are cute and festive creatures and a unique way to decorate your home for Christmas or make a fun gift for someone.

This workshop aimed at beginners and those building on their pottery techniques and experience and offers a welcoming environment to explore clay.

It's primarily for adults, but we warmly welcome anyone aged 10 and above. We just ask that younger participants are able to maintain concentration and engagement throughout the three-hour session.

All materials and equipment are provided. While we won't get too messy, we recommend not wearing your best white top. Clay should wash out, but feel free to bring an apron if you prefer.

Your creations cannot be taken home on the day. Your pottery will need to be dried, fired and glazed to your choice of colour. They will be ready to collect at your convenience from the venue 3-4 weeks later.
