Introduction

Amigurumi is a style of crochet which was developed in Japan, and is often used to make really cute animals and characters! This course is a great way to get into crocheting your own zoo, farm or pre-historic collection and you only need to be able to chain, slip stitch and double crochet to get started. Everything else you need to know will be explained and supported by your tutor Jo including increasing, decreasing, using stitch markers and the dreaded counting. We have extended this course to five sessions to enable you to get even more confident and make more cute characters. If you want there is no reason that you can’t attend this course more than once to try something more ambitious the second time and improve your skills.

Session schedule

We will build on your existing crochet skills to learn all the techniques you need to design and crochet your own amigurumi character.

Session One
We will start by looking at different examples of amigurumi and the techniques used to make them. We will discuss how different shapes are created and how these are used to create unique characters. You will then use the basic techniques to crochet your own cute bookworm. We will also discuss the pattern you have chosen to make in sessions two and three, and the wool that will be needed to create it.

Session Two
Your lovely tutor will support you to create your own amigurumi character from the pattern you have chosen, customising them if required. You could customise with colour choice, decoration and features or changing shapes of arms and legs. In fact whatever takes your fancy!

Session Three, Four and Five
We will continue to work on our custom characters and, depending on the complexity of your design, finish them and maybe even start another one.

What should I bring with me?

Just bring yourself and a pattern that you would like to follow in sessions two and three. You can bring your own crochet hook if you prefer (size 4mm), but hooks will be provided for use during the sessions. We will provide all the materials you need for your bookworm, and 4 balls of either Special DK, Chunky or Organics DK cotton.
However you need anything more particular for your custom character you will need to get it elsewhere– we will go through what your requirements are in session one, and you can then purchase before the next session.
