Class Name: Beginners’ Pottery Course
Learners per Class: 8
No. of Sessions: 5
Length of Session: 2.5 hours
Suitable for complete beginners or those who want to expand their skills and knowledge this is a creative and enjoyable pottery skills course learning different ways to build and decorate pottery. It will explore a range of ways to decorate your pottery including the use of coloured slips and you will learn 2 techniques for building 4 pots.
We will begin with some basic techniques needed for working in clay which will give you the skills needed to get started. Over the 5 sessions we will learn 2 different building techniques for making pots. This will be the pinch pot and wrap around techniques. We will also explore multiple different ways to decorate your pots including raised decoration and an exploration of using coloured slips. We will then put these ideas together to allow you to make and decorate your own pots to take home.
Clare will explain some ways to personalise your pieces through adjusting the building and decorating techniques. You will each take home sample decorating tiles and at least 4 pots that you have made and decorated yourself. For more detail see below...
Learn about the first basic skills for working with clay- such as preparing the clay, joining clay and rolling out accurately. We will also get to work on our first technique - Pinch pots.
This week we will explore decorating techniques. We’ll create sample tiles and learn about different ways to use coloured slip including painting, sponging, sgraffito, paper resits and double layer techniques.
We will learn our second construction skill- the wrap around technique. We’ll also create handles for our pots and learn the technique for attaching them.
This week we’ll see the result of our slip decorating sample tiles. We’ll spend some time developing our designs using some clever ‘design tricks’ that Clare loves to use. We’ll then be ready to begin redecorating our pots.
A final week of decorating and finishing off our pieces. Everyone will be using their own designs and will have the opportunity to create finished pots or cups that will be unique to them!
It is expected that you’ll have 2 pinch pots and 2 wrap around pots (all can be with or without handles depending on your design choices) decorated and finished by the end of the course. There will be the opportunity to have more pieces fired if you have created more- this will be at an additional cost of £3 per piece.
Join us if you’ve had no pottery experience or if you’ve had experience but would enjoy the opportunity to play with clay.
No need to bring anything along with you as everything you need will be provided on the day. Although old clothes are a good idea and an apron if you have one, otherwise we have one you can borrow don't worry.
At the end of the course the finished pots will be left at StraightCurves to be fired and you will be contacted when they are ready to be collected- this is expected to be within 2 weeks of the workshop. Please see extra details below to explain more.
Clay needs to be fired after it has been dried which is why there is a wait of approximately 2 weeks for the finished pieces to be ready. As is sometimes the case with clay there can occasionally be a degree of unpredictability with the firing timings and outcomes. This project has been planned to have a minimum chance of any issues but we like to explain that this is always a factor when working in clay. This is the joy and challenge of making pottery!
