Beginners Knitting Course

These sessions will be relaxed and focus on skill building and gaining confidence to attempt more complex patterns after completing the course.

Session One:
We will look at how to cast on using two needles and how to do knit stitch. We will start to make a small project such as a mobile phone sock, glasses case or mug hug.

Session Two:
We will check you have got the hang of knit stitch, casting on and off and then start on making a cute rabbit or chick. This pattern involves simple shaping including increasing and decreasing stitches while working in garter stitch. We will also start to look at pattern reading in this session.

Session Three:
We will have a go at purling and move on to combining these basic stitches to create different effects – these combinations are known as garter stitch, stocking stitch and moss stitch. We will look at how this is shown in knitting patterns to help increase your confidence to work independently after the course.

Session Four and Five:
We will make sure you have cracked all the basics going over any bits you would like to practice again and then you get to pick a simple project to get started on. This could be something you bring in with you or you can browse our books to find something. The wool for this is not included in the course as it will vary greatly depending on what you pick so you can either bring it with you or buy some from us.

For those with no knowledge of knitting or those who used to knit a long time ago but you must have a desire to knit and enthusiasm to learn (min. age 11 – children must be accompanied by adults at all times).

Just bring yourself as you will receive your beginners knitting kit.

The kit will include 2 sets of knitting needles (4mm and 6mm), a knitters needle, small scissors and 3 balls of 100g of Stylecraft Special yarn.

All specialist wool and accessories for the mini projects will be provided in the first 3 sessions. For sessions 4 and 5 you will need to bring wool along or buy some from us but don't worry we will cover this in session 3 so you have an idea what to get.

All the skills you learn, all the work you produce during the sessions and your beginner’s knitting kit.

You will also receive a knitting portfolio which will contain instructions for all skills covered, spaces to display your skill building work and patterns for all the mini projects covered.
