Crochet Amigurumi Course

Crochet Amigurumi

Amigurumi is a style of crochet which was developed in Japan, and is often used to make really cute animals and characters!

Who Is This Course For?

The Crochet Amigurumi Course is suitable for anybody aged 14 and over who has either completed the Beginners’ Crochet Course or is proficient in chain and double crochet. There will be just 6 learners on this course to ensure you get lots of help from your tutor to create your super cute (or scary) animals.

How?

We will build on your existing crochet skills to learn all the techniques you need to design and crochet your own amigurumi character.

Session One

We will start by looking at different examples of amigurumi and the techniques used to make them. We will discuss how different shapes are created and how these are used to create unique characters. You will then use the basic techniques to crochet your own cute bookworm. We will also discuss the pattern you have chosen to make in sessions two and three, and the wool that will be needed to create it.

Session Two

Your lovely tutor will support you to create your own amigurumi character from the pattern you have chosen, customising them if required. You could customise with colour choice, decoration and features or changing shapes of arms and legs. In fact whatever takes your fancy!

Session Three

We will continue to work on our custom characters and, depending on the complexity of your design, finish them today ready for a character parade!

What Should I Bring With Me?

Just bring yourself and a pattern that you would like to follow in sessions two and three. You can bring your own crochet hook if you prefer (size 4mm), but hooks will be provided for use during the sessions. We will provide all the materials you need for your bookworm, however you will need to provide the wool for your custom character – we will go through what your requirements are in session one, and you can then purchase before the next session.

What Do I Take Home?

You will take home your completed custom character and full instructions and patterns to carry on creating your own amigurumi parade! You will also have one ball of Stylecraft DK from which you will have only used a small amount to make your bookworm, and five purple stitch markers!

Beginners’ Crochet Course

Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of material strands such as yarn or thread using a crochet hook. The name is from the French word “crochet” meaning small hook. Our beginners’ crochet course covers all of the basics over five weeks, at our fully accessible studio building in Chesterfield.

Who Is This Course For?

For those with no knowledge of crochet or those who used to crochet a long time ago in a land far far away but you must have a desire to crochet and enthusiasm to learn (min. age 11 – children must be accompanied by adults at all times).

How?

You will be provided with a portfolio which will contain instructions for all skills covered, spaces to display your skill building work and patterns for all the mini projects covered.

Session One

We will begin the course with a demonstration and skill building session that will cover foundation chains, rows, turning and double crochet stitches. We will spend time perfecting these new skills, before you put them into practice by beginning your very first project which could be either a phone case or a mug hug!

Session Two

In the second session, we will finish off your first project – looking at how to slip stitch and sew in ends! We will then learn two new stitches – half treble crochet and treble crochet!

Session Three

Granny Squares!! In our third session you’ll master the traditional crochet square and learn all about changing colours. We’ll warn you now though, they’re addictive – once you start you’ll just keep going on, and on, and round, and round until your square is a huge blanket!

Session Four

Using all of the stitches and skills you have learned so far, we will create a posy of flowers in pretty coloured chunky wool as you learn a bit more about following a pattern!

Session Five

In our final session we will build on our pattern-reading skills as you make a cute gecko! You can choose to make him from either cotton, double knit or chunky wool, and you will see how the choice of yarn and hook size affects a finished project!

What Should I Bring With Me?

Just bring yourself as you will receive your beginners crochet kit.
The kit (see photo) will include a range of 22 different sized crochet hooks , a knitters needle, small general purpose scissors and 2 x 100g balls of yarn (Stylecraft Special 100% acrylic DK).

All specialist wool and accessories for the mini projects will be provided in the sessions. If you would like to attach your flowers to something you already own like a bag or hat you can bring it along (no need to bring to first session though).

What Do I Take Home?

All the skills you learn, all the work you produce during the workshops (including your gecko and flowers), your portfolio (instructions/patterns) and your beginners crochet kit.
