Learn how to make a long or short skirt, with an elasticated waist. The pattern can be made to fit either a child or teenager, so no matter what your age, you’ll learn how to make a skirt that you can customise and make over and over!
Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is suitable for children aged 8 – 18, who have a basic knowledge of sewing with a machine. You need to be able to sew a straightish line and it would also be good if you were happy using an iron, but your tutor can help you with this if you’re not confident yet.
Please note there will only be 4 learners on this course so that you’ll get lots of support with the new skills you’ll be learning.
We will start with cutting out the correct size from the pattern, after taking some measurements – you can choose whether to make a long skirt or a shorter one – then we’ll look at how the skirt is constructed.
You’ll sew the skirt seams and finish the edges, before making a casing for your skirt elastic and threading it through. Finally you will hem your skirt and if you like you can add some trim.
Don’t worry if this sounds a bit complicated, your lovely tutor will guide you through, step by step.
What Should I Bring With Me?
You’ll need to bring 1.5 m of fabric with you and if you want to put some trim on the bottom you’ll need about 1.5m of that too.
You can use any fabric you like but try to avoid shiny, slippery fabrics. Denim, corduroy or a heavy cotton is good but if you want something a bit dressier, choose something a bit lighter!
What Do I Take Home?
You’ll take home your lovely new skirt to wear with pride, and the skills and confidence to make another one by yourself. There’s no greater feeling than wearing something you’ve made and getting lots of compliments!
Don’t forget your fabric!
