Pyjamas Two Ways

Tutor: Tracey Symonds
Length: 7.5 hours
Max Learners: 5

This three session course will show you how to make pyjamas from cotton and jersey fabric, creating channels, hems and seams, and even creating your own bias binding! Don’t worry, it’s not as difficult as it sounds, and your lovely tutor will help you every step of the way!

Who Is This Course For?

For those aged 14 years and over who can use a sewing machine, thread up and sew straight-ish. If you have attended the StraightCurves Beginners Sewing Machine Course then this is a great follow on. You do not need to have learned your skills with us though-  all lovely learners welcome.

Please note there will only be 5 learners on this course to ensure quality of experience and that we have plenty of room to cut our fabric.

During this course you will make 2 unisex pairs of pyjamas, one from 100% cotton fabric with french seams and one with jersey fabric finished on the overlocker. The course will cover skills required to adjust the pattern to your size in terms of leg length and rise (to avoid you looking like MC Hammer or Simon Cowell!)

Session One

We will look at the pattern, sizing and adjustments including how to lay the pattern out on your cotton and cutting out accurately. Next we will work on constructing the pjs including the use of french seams and checking their fit. Seams will be pressed and bottoms ready for constructing hems and channel in the next session.

Session Two

Starting with completing our cotton pjs including how to create the channel around the waistline, adding the elastic and ribbon tag (to make sure you put them on the right way round). Then we will look at cutting the jersey pyjamas out and using the overlocker to neaten the seams.

Please note this course will not cover how to thread up the overlocker – this is covered in our introduction to overlockers workshop.

Session Three

We will complete the construction of our jersey PJs, including the channel and the hems. Then if desired you can create your own bias binding to add to a bought vest top (supplied by you) to create a matching set with your new pyjama bottoms.

What Should I Bring With Me?

You need to bring the fabric and matching thread for both pairs of pyjama bottoms. We will supply everything else including the pattern, elastic, ribbon and equipment for use within the sessions. If you want to create a matching vest top in session 3, then you should also provide this – your lovely tutor will let you know what you need in session two!

The fabric should be 100% Cotton and Jersey and 45″ wide.

One length below to be purchased before course in each fabric – ie. if making medium size you need 2.5m of cotton and 2.5m of jersey fabric plus matching threads

Small or Medium: Approx. 2.5m

Large, XL or XXL: Approx. 3m

XXXL: Approx. 4m

Please ask for quantities when booking if you have 60″ fabric.

What Do I Take Home?

You will take away all the skills you learn, your pattern, 2 pairs of pyjamas, bias binding made by yourself and probably a desire to buy fabric or more patterns.
