This beginner’s course designed to help you master a sewing machine! From the basics of threading up, through to hems and French seams, you’ll leave feeling confident in your sewing abilities!
Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for those with no knowledge of how to use a sewing machine.
The minimum age for this workshop is 14 – children under 18 must be accompanied by adults at all times. If you have a younger child who would like to learn to sew, then our Young Sewer’s Course is for them!
It would be helpful but not essential if you can hand sew with a needle and thread
We will start with a demonstration, presentation and skill building session that will cover the basics of using a sewing machine including names & functions of parts, threading up, winding bobbins and controlling/using the machine.
We will then move on to making basic seams and hems, including learning key technical terms such as wrong side, right side and seam allowances. We will then move on to creating some simple projects using the sewing machine including: cushion cover, shoulder/book bag and drawstring bag.
The focus will be on skill building and confidence therefore some learners may decide after the first project to focus on just one of the remaining two projects in the available time (dependent on ability).
What Should I Bring With Me?
Just bring yourself as you will receive everything you need for use during the workshop.
What Do I Take Home?
All the skills you have learned, your learning portfolio (full instructions for everything covered on course), all the work you produce during the workshops (including your cushion inner) and your StraightCurves sewing machine driving license certificate!
Please note this course is intentionally 3 days to ensure you go home confident to carry on sewing independently, including being able to create all 3 projects again in varying sizes without the use of patterns.
