This course will lead you through creating a personalised dress block using your own measurements. The block will then be transformed into a pattern, and finally a dress toile.
Who is this Course For?
This course is for anybody who has an interest in basic pattern cutting, no existing skills are necessary you just need to be keen to learn.
You should be able to sew in straight lines and around curves using a standard sewing machine – please call us if you have any queries regarding this – if you need to learn how to use a machine please look at our Sewing Machine Skills Course first.
Please note there will only be 5 learners on this course to ensure you have enough space to work (please note there may be 7 learners on the first session).
We will begin by taking your measurements to enable you to adapt the block for yourself. We will then do a little bit of maths to enable us to get the correct measurements to transfer to the block – don’t worry, it’s nothing too difficult! We’ll then move on to a bit of dart manipulation (moving darts) before you put your own stamp on the block by adding your own style lines to the neck and hem lines.
We will create a facing pattern for the neck and armholes, and a front and back dress pattern complete with seam allowance. Your pattern will then be checked by your tutor to ensure it is ready for lay planning in the next session.
We will learn all about lay planning your patterns correctly on the straight grain (don’t worry your tutor will explain all!) ready to cut out and begin the making up of the dress.
We will continue making the toile, complete with facings, side seams and shoulder seams.
We will complete the toile ready to fit, and make any adjustments directly back to the block master pattern in order for you to transfer into card for future reference.
Throughout the course, every step will be demonstrated to you by your lovely tutor who will be on hand to offer any assistance required.
What Should I Bring With Me?
