This dressmaking course is perfect if you feel you need a little bit of guidance to help you understand bought patterns and all the terminology involved, or just to allow you to have a go at that dress pattern you have had for ages but not had time to make!
Who is this Course For?
This course is for those with an interest in dress making who would like to learn more about commercial patterns and maybe get some insider knowledge and shortcuts about how to do things differently.
You should be able to sew in straight lines and around curves using a standard sewing machine – please call us if you have any queries regarding this. If you need to learn how to use a machine please look at our Sewing Machine Skills Course first.
Please note there will only be 5 learners on this course to ensure you have enough space to spread out and lots of lovely help and guidance from your tutor.
We will work through how to make your dress step-by-step with support and input from your lovely tutor throughout. The course is broken down into five sessions:
We will discuss everyone’s patterns and how to cut the correct size dependent on the dress style, fit and fabric choice. We will discuss fabrics (so you can buy it) and get the pattern cut out ready for lay planning in the next session.
We will learn all about lay planning your patterns correctly on the straight grain (don’t worry your tutor will explain all) ready to cut out and begin the making up of the dress.
Sessions Three & Four
We will work through the steps involved in making up your dresses. This will be tailored to the patterns you have chosen so exact content will vary for each learner. You will get the chance to see what the other learners are up to and learn about their dresses too!
Finishing off, fitting and fiddling (making adjustments as needed) so that you can take home your finished dress.
What Should I Bring With Me?
All equipment is provided on this course, but you will need to bring a dress pattern with you to session one. We are stockists of Simplicity Patterns so if you would like to buy from their catalogue, you can pre-order when booking your place.
Between sessions one and two, you will need to purchase your fabric with matching thread and haberdashery – don’t panic, your tutor will talk you through this! If you would like to bring your own personal sewing kit please do so, but this is not required.
Patterns should be for a simple dress – we recommend a shift dress or A-line unless you already have some existing dressmaking experience in which case you can pick something a little more complex. If you would like help choosing please let us know. Patterns can include a zip and darts but should avoid complexity (no wedding dresses please!). Please let us know when booking what type of dress you are getting a pattern for so we can be prepared.
What do I take home?
All the skills you have learnt and your finished dress ready to be worn!
WARNING – Potential Side Effects: As a result of attending this course, you will probably develop an overwhelming desire to buy more patterns, make more dresses, and possibly even sign up to another dressmaking course!
